Following Her Interests Around the World

For Athena Bowe ('11), following her curiosity about people, cultures, and consumer behavior has led to a global career spanning entertainment, technology, and consumer research.

By combining anthropology, consumer psychology, entertainment, and global strategy, Athena has built a career helping some of the world's leading brands better understand the people they serve.

After graduating from Vail Christian High School in 2011, Athena attended Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in East Asian Studies and Anthropology. As a prestigious Fung Scholar, she received funding to study and conduct research in China, an experience that shaped her passion for understanding cultures and consumer behavior.

While at Harvard, Athena took on several leadership roles with the Harvard Association for U.S.-China Relations, helping organize annual conferences in Shanghai and Beijing that brought together more than 800 students each year. Her senior thesis explored how Chinese audiences responded differently to domestic and foreign television programming, examining how culture, censorship policy, and generational experience shape the meaning people attach to media.

After graduation, Athena joined market research firm Interpret, where she advised major film studios, gaming companies, and technology leaders on audience behavior across the United States, China, Europe, and South America. As the entertainment industry evolved, so did her work. She specialized in helping companies understand gaming communities, localize products for international audiences, and identify emerging market opportunities. She also launched a widely read industry newsletter covering trends in Chinese film and gaming for executives at companies including Disney, Sony, Warner Bros., and Ubisoft.

In 2017, Athena co-founded the Los Angeles Chinese Film Festival, serving as Chief Operating Officer for nearly seven years. She led marketing, production, finance, and strategic planning while helping create programs that promoted Chinese creative talent within the American entertainment industry.

Athena later became Head of Research and Development Strategy at TubeScience, where she led consumer research and innovation for one of North America's largest producers of social media advertising. Working directly with executive leadership, she transformed audience insights into strategies that shaped billions of digital advertising views each month for roughly 5% of all video ads on Meta.

In 2022, Athena launched her own consulting firm, Digital Anthropology, LLC. Today, she works with companies in the technology, entertainment, and consumer product industries to uncover the “voice of the consumer: what makes people buy, play, watch, and obsess.” Blending qualitative cultural insights with quantitative market research, she helps organizations identify new opportunities, improve products, and strengthen marketing strategies. Over the course of her career, she's worked across a variety of companies, including Google, LinkedIn, Disney, Warner Bros., Riot Games, Blizzard, LEGO, Dollar Shave Club, Fenty Beauty, Calm, Noom, and many other globally recognized brands.

Athena has also embraced life as a digital nomad, living in or visiting more than 26 countries between 2020 and 2025 while working with clients around the world.

Looking back on her years at Vail Christian High School, Athena remembers a community that encouraged exploration.

"The small, tight-knit family atmosphere gave me space to try many different things," she says. "I especially appreciated the opportunities I had through the science program and dance team, which let me join as a novice and gave me a lifelong love of dance."

Her advice to today's students reflects the mindset that has guided her own journey.

"Use your time in high school to sample different activities, opportunities, and interests. Don't do things just because you think you should. Follow what genuinely interests you, and don't feel you have to be locked into any one path the whole time. Everything you learn on the way, and the questions you keep coming back to, often shape interesting paths you could never plot out from the beginning."
