Vail Christian High School Alumni Feature: Ryan Downey '20: Aerospace Innovator
From Tornado Research to Autonomous Space Systems
For Ryan Downey ('20), one opportunity has continually led to the next. What began as a passion for engineering grew into groundbreaking research with autonomous drones studying tornadoes, which opened the door to advanced graduate studies and ultimately a career developing cutting-edge aerospace technologies.
Today, Ryan is a Guidance, Navigation and Control Engineer with Lockheed Martin Space, helping shape the future of autonomous systems for some of the nation's most innovative space and defense programs.
After graduating from Vail Christian High School in 2020, Ryan attended the University of Colorado Boulder, where he earned both his Bachelor of Arts in Aerospace Engineering (2024) and Master of Engineering in Aerospace Engineering (2025) through the university's accelerated BAMM program. Completing both degrees in just five years, Ryan specialized in hypersonic aerothermodynamic flows and earned a Certificate in Hypersonics.
Throughout college, Ryan gained extensive hands-on research experience through a three-year internship with CU Boulder's Integrated Remote and In-Situ Sensing (IRISS) Lab. As the lead pilot of unmanned aircraft used in tornado research, he worked with researchers from 47 universities developing autonomous drone systems designed to improve severe weather forecasting. By integrating drones with ground-based and satellite observation systems, the team worked toward extending tornado warning times and improving public safety.
Ryan's passion for autonomous systems continued through his senior capstone project, where he helped develop the Autonomous Robotic Drone Vehicle for Aerial Reconnaissance and Communication (ARDVARC). The project used unmanned aerial systems and radio-frequency technology to accurately locate and track ground vehicles, demonstrating the growing role of autonomous technology in navigation and communication.
His research experience soon attracted the attention of Lockheed Martin. During a university career fair, a recruiter noticed Ryan's work with autonomous drones and connected him with a program manager seeking engineers with expertise in guidance, navigation, and control systems.
Since joining Lockheed Martin Space in 2025 as a Guidance, Navigation and Control Engineer, Ryan has been working on advanced autonomous technologies in a classified program supporting collaborations with the U.S. Department of Defense, NASA, and SpaceX. His role has quickly evolved from theoretical engineering to hands-on development, and he will soon relocate from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, to Sunnyvale, California, where he will continue developing next-generation autonomous systems.
Looking back, Ryan credits Vail Christian High School with preparing him academically and equipping him with skills that extended well beyond engineering.
"I left VCHS as a very well-rounded student," he says. "Mr. Jager and Mr. Bruce gave me an outstanding math foundation, and Mrs. Cooper challenged me to think critically, read carefully, and communicate effectively. Those skills made a tremendous difference once I got to college."
Ryan encourages today's VCHS students to embrace every opportunity.
"Explore everything," he says. "You never know what will spark your interest. Do something spontaneous. Don't be afraid to be a kid. Put anxiety to the side, stop and smell the roses, and take advantage of the Vail Valley while you can."
