Finding the Courage to Create: Jonathan Armstead '06

If you knew Jonathan Armstead during his years at Vail Christian High School, you probably remember him as the class clown.

"My goal every day was to not just get my friends laughing, but to get the teachers laughing, as well,"

Today, he's still making people laugh, but now his audience numbers in the millions. Jonathan ('06) is the creator behind Jon the Dad, one of social media's fastest-growing parenting and millennial comedy brands. As a content creator, comedian, and commercial actor based in Dallas, Texas, he has built an audience of nearly 1 million followers across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, generating more than 1 billion video views in just 3 years. His relatable humor about parenting, marriage, and growing up in the Y2K era has led to partnerships with brands including Crest, Fisher-Price, Lowe's, Apple TV+, Gillette, and many others.

Jonathan's creative journey began long before social media. At VCHS, he immersed himself in theater, appearing in nearly every production and playing the role of Thenardier in Les Misérables. He loved creating comedic videos for Spanish class, choosing creative projects whenever possible, and formed the band 10th Flavor with classmates Blake Gruber, Tommy Peskorz, and Nate Hanan, performing at local venues throughout Eagle County.

"I've always loved acting, music, storytelling, and making videos," he says. "Looking back, VCHS gave me the opportunity to explore all of those interests."

After graduating in 2006, Jonathan attended the University of Denver, earning both his bachelor's degree and MBA in Marketing through the university's 4+1 program while minoring in Film Production. Like many graduates entering the workforce during the Great Recession, he didn't find immediate success. After spending several months traveling in Buenos Aires, he eventually moved to Dallas, where he built a successful career in advertising and branding, earning numerous Dallas ADDY and American Marketing Association awards.

Yet even while succeeding professionally, Jonathan felt drawn toward comedy, acting, and creating videos.

That opportunity finally came during the COVID-19 pandemic when he posted a parody video online that quickly garnered tens of thousands of views. For the first time, he realized there was an audience for his own creative voice.

While working in influencer marketing for BRP (Can-Am, Sea-Doo, Ski-Doo, etc.), Jonathan began working with other content creators, influencers, and celebrities, and saw behind the curtain on how it was done. Then, in late 2023, he introduced the world to Jon the Dad.

Six months later, a simple 10-second video about Jon as a child playing in a department store clothing rack exploded to more than 32 million views and gained over 15,000 followers almost overnight. It was the turning point he had been waiting for.

In the spring of 2025, Jonathan made the difficult decision to leave the security of his corporate marketing career to pursue content creation full-time. The transition wasn't easy. He supplemented his income by playing music gigs, accumulated debt, and relied heavily on his faith as he built his business.

"I kept praying, kept creating, and trusted that God would open the right doors," he says.

Those doors did open. Brand partnerships grew rapidly, and within a year he was earning more from Jon the Dad than he had in his corporate career. Today, in addition to creating content, he works as a commercial actor while continuing to grow his online community.

Jonathan lives in Dallas with his wife, Sara, and their son, Brooks (6), and daughter, Beckett (4); the family who inspires much of the content that has connected with millions of viewers.

Looking back, Jonathan believes the passions that once made him the class clown ultimately became the foundation of his career.

"The things you're naturally drawn to are there for a reason," he says. "Don’t ignore it. Don’t fight it. And don't be afraid to pursue what makes you come alive. Work hard, stay faithful, and trust that God’s got your back. Chances are your passions will lead you further than you ever could have imagined."
